About
This game was created for the NOKIA 3310 JAM (https://itch.io/jam/nokiajam2).
This is the first game jam I have participated in and I am glad I joined.
The theme of the jam was "death is good", and while I at first thought about creating a game where you play as Death and you give away free doughnuts... I went with a more simple approach that fits my current skill while challenging me a bit and still being achievable in a short time.
That turned out to be a platformer where you use death as a way to progress easier.
Many of the mechanics you see here I have never worked on before, so it was an interesting challenge. And it turns out the limited pixels on screen affect the movement of objects in-game in terms of moving a set number of pixels per frame, I didn't consider this stuff before working under these limitations.
I would have liked to add more mechanics related to using death, maybe some more levels and such. Didn't manage to in time.
Also would have loved to have some better looking assets in it. But this is what I could do, and as you can see, I am not an artist, haha. The SFX might not be the best fit for the old Nokia phone either.
Anyway, the game as it is right now feels even to me more like a demo of different mechanics than a.. well, a well thought out game. But I am very happy I worked on it, it was very engaging and I learned something from it.

very nice concept with some cool art :)
Hey is there anyway to contact you on social media? I love your games!
Hey! I appreciate that. :) I wish I did, but I don't do game development anymore at the moment because I lack the time. Thanks for reaching out though!
Very cool game!
Thank you! :)
Press E.
I just noticed that there is a bug that no one told me about until this point... Wow. When you get there, if you don't do anything for a longer time, the letter "E" should appear in the air. Instead, "Q" does, haha.
Good thing I also wrote the controls in the description.
Thank you, and please feel free to take inspiration as much as you want from this game, I'm happy it inspires people.
This is awesome! I like the old style of this game and music too. I hope you will make more nokia games like this one.
Thank you so much!
I will try to make one for the current game jam if I get some free time. I can't guarantee it will be like this one, though :)
The first game i've played till the end! Awesome. Good job!
Haha, really nice to hear you had a great time. Thank you very much!
This was all surprisingly intuitive! I ran into a touch of jank with movement catching on edges, and as someone who holds the jump button (you know, for more height) it felt a little awkward having it immediately re-jump as soon as I landed on the upper platform I was jumping to.
Those things are super minor though, I had a great little time with this game.
Thank you! I was most striving for intuitiveness.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it despite that little flaw, haha.
I have known about the issue since I made the game and I'm not sure why I have not implemented a better system. I probably did not know how to.
I think I left it that way to make jumps easier when players pressed the jump button a few fractions of a second before touching the ground, but now I know that can be taken care of in a different, better way.
I will try to implement it better in my submission to the current jam. If I manage to make anything, that is.
my record is 3 minutes 10 seconds 08 millisecond, beat that
new record 3 minutes 4 seconds 11 milliseconds
2 minutes 46 seconds 55 milliseconds
Your time is very good!
I just found out today that the best recorded time is somewhere around 1 minute and 14 seconds, which is pretty insane, haha.
I hope this is not discouraging. I'm thrilled to see you enjoyed the game enough to beat it multiple times and improve on your previous records. That's really awesome.
If you are interested in the video of the aforementioned speedrun, here it is:
This is so fun and creative. Thanks for spending your time making this!
Thank you for spending your time playing my game. I am glad you enjoy it :)
fantastic job! Which resolution is that ?
Thank you! The game adhered to the jam restrictions of a 84x48 pixel display, though I zoomed in about 10 times so I guess the resolution was 840 x 480..? I might be a bit off with the exact scaling.
Great game! Really cool idea. I found a bug though. I noticed how you make the corpses disappear when they're in front of the door? It's only happened once, I can't replicate it again, but if the player is in the air and they press Q to quit living, then the corpse falls in front of the door and it's impossible to get out unless you remove corpses or restart level. :( Other than that, really fun well-polished game :D
It's inspiring that you only found one of its problems, haha. Sorry you had to restart. And thank you very much, I'm very glad you liked it this much!
interesting and inspiring idea man. keep it up.
Hopefully I will one of these days. Thanks :)
Absolutely amazing! I'm contemplating joining the next 3310 jam, but this game sets the bar quite high! :)
Haha, don't worry about it. I'm sure there will be a lot of much better games this year too as they were last year as well, but do not mind that, just focus on making something that you enjoy.
And thank you very much. :)
I wish real life had a Q button
._.
Great Game!
Thank you! :)
wow man it was a freaking great concept ,I loved it. Here I was searching for inspiration and I found you.It was great man.
That's one of the most encouraging things I have heard about my work. Thank you, I'm glad you found so much value in this little game. :)
Can you detail how you created the game ? Did u use some engine etc
I created the game using GameMaker Studio 2 and I made the art assets myself, which should come as a shock to no one, haha.
Unfortunately I did not keep a log of how I did it, mainly because I barely knew what I was doing, having limited experience with the engine.
It is a simple game, however, I should be able to create it once again without a problem if I needed to, I think, but believe me when I say that the game's charm fades away when you see all the improvisations and patchwork I had to do for it to function as it does.
For example, for all the portals in the game, I hardcoded the coordinates to which they had to teleport the player once he entered. There was no real link between the portal entry and the exit.
I would have also liked to have the player be able to push around corpses, but that proved much more difficult than I would have imagined.
It is a very imperfect game and there were lots of things I did not know how to do when I started and lots of other things I still did not know when I finished. It was somewhat of a shock to me to see it win the Nokia Game Jam 2. :)
If you have more specific questions about how mechanics of a game like this would be implemented, or any other particularities of it, I'll try to answer and to be as helpful as possible.
Cute and fun to play :)
Thank you! :)
very addictive and cute!
Thank you so much!
Such a great game! I played to the end and was fully enthralled!
Thank you, I'm happy to hear you had such a good time with it :)

I'm happy you like it!
Unique concept, great game!
Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed the game!!
I'm very pleased to hear that :)
How fast do you think this game can go
Fast as in...a speedrun?
Yes
So far I have gotten the game down to 1m 29s
Ok, someone else got it down to 1:14
Nice game. Love to play some more.
Thank you. You mean as in extra content?
I was working on a full release a few months ago, but I had to pause working on my project for a while... I hope I'll be able to get back to it eventually. :)
I love that the levels are short and simple, not to hard to play, it was fun and really enjoyable.
cool concept
Thank you!!
Awesome game my dude.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Really cool game! such a unique concept! :)
Thanks so much! :)
I'll assume you mean "cool", haha, thanks
i love it
Thank you! I'm happy you do!
Man I really enjoyed that!
That's so good to hear :)
Yeah dude, well done! It really is true that limitations breed creativity-- I'm very impressed XD
Ha! What a fun game! A lot of "a ha" moments when I died... and it made things easier.
I'm happy you enjoyed it!
very engaging and well made game :)
Thank you so much :)
This is a very well done little game! The tutorials are well designed to help players understand the mechanics. Love it!
Thank you very much. It pleases me a lot to hear people talk about the learning curve of the game. I did my best within the constraints. ^^
This was a nifty little game within the contraints, reminded me a bit of the "boxboy" games on 3ds. Thanks for making & sharing! <3
Thank you for playing! I didn't know about those games until now, they really look alike. I guess that's what you do when you can't make sophisticated graphics, haha.
This was so cute and lovely! My brother and I played the whole thing! The design of this game is absolutely excellent!
It is heartwarming to hear you and your brother had a good time with my game. :)
i finished it ty
Thank you for playing!
When playing the first few levels I was already enjoying myself, it is an fascinating game mechanic and the levels are well done.
What game engine did you use to make this?
Thank you!! I made it in GameMaker Studio 2
I love that game
:D happy to hear that
